How new perspective on leadership relates to the various types Essay
How new point of view on administration identifies with the different sorts - Essay Example Another idea that Nonaka and Takeuchi talked about in the meeting is the idea of ââ¬Å"phronesisâ⬠or handy intelligence. Phronesis is ââ¬Å"the propensity for settling on the correct choices and taking the correct activities in setting, and steady quest for greatness for the normal goodâ⬠(Nonaka and Takeuchi, Wise Leadership, 2011). They went on further to state that phronesis can be developed through extremely close human cooperations. This new point of view on initiative is a lot of identified with the past ideas of administration. Different articles on initiative in the course book additionally bolstered the possibility of Nonaka and Takeuchi about being a moral head. The articles on the course book likewise stressed that pioneers must have an enthusiasm to do right. This also was pushed by Nonaka and Takeuchi when they referenced the significance of having an ethical reason and doing what is useful for society. The six capacities of a shrewd pioneer which were count ed in Nonakaââ¬â¢s and Takeuchiââ¬â¢s article are strong and interwoven with the ââ¬Å"Seven Habits of Ethical Leadersâ⬠taken up in the course reading readings. The primary capacity of a savvy head is that he can pass judgment on goodness. In like manner, a moral head has an enthusiasm to do right and understand the significance of morals in the dynamic procedure.

Hamlet themes essays
Hamlet subjects papers There are numerous subjects all through The Merchant of Venice; one is the inconsistency among affection and riches. The admirers and their pick of coffins fill in as a genuine model. Every admirer is given the decision to find the picture of Portia from one of three boxes: gold, silver, and lead. The two admirers preceding Bassanio pick the coffins of the more valuable metals and are ineffective in light of the fact that the parchment unmistakably states, You that pick by the view, chance as reasonable and pick as obvious. At the point when it comes times for Bassanio to pick a coffin, he picks the least valuable one. Choosing this one makes it clear that Bassanio is picking his adoration for Portia, as opposed to her riches. Thus, this is additionally appeared through the relationship of Jessica and her dad Shylock. It is made obvious that Shylock is excessively worried about his cash, instead of his little girl. At the point when Shylock hears updates on his little girls marriage he comes out saying, My girl! O my ducats! O my daughter!...My ducats and my little girl. By saying this, he puts his girl and his cash on a similar level and shows off his indistinct qualities. Strangely however, Jessica feels the inverse about her dad. She is embarrassed to have traded her affection and reliability to her dad for the love of a Christian, Lorenzo. Additionally, Shylock doesn't care for music and accepts individuals who do ought not be trusted. When Jessica says, I am never cheerful when I hear sweet music, this announcement demonstrates that music has made her think about her dad and consider her own activities. Along these lines, in Jessicas case theres love however in Shylocks case there is love versus riche s. Then again, another topic in this composing is fellowship, which experiences a couple of various sets of characters. Incidentally, the play opens with fellowship, kinship is a significant perspective in the preliminary scene, and the play closes showing what kinship will do. Tubal is ... <!

Attractive Teens Dont Have More Self-Esteem Than Peers
Attractive Teens Dont Have More Self-Esteem Than Peers More in Depression Childhood Depression Causes Symptoms Diagnosis Treatment Types Suicide Its widely believed that beauty and self-esteem go together, but this may not actually be the case for teens, according to a study published in The Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology.?? Photographs of 230 13- to 15-year-olds were rated for facial attractiveness and compared to their levels of self-esteem over five years. They found that the adolescents who were rated as most attractive actually had lower baseline levels of self-esteem than their less-attractive counterparts. Over the course of the study, they found that for most, self-esteem increased and became more stable as the adolescents transitioned into early adulthood, especially for those who reported higher levels of education. Researchers found that girls had lower levels of self-esteem than boys overallâ"and notably, the adolescent girls were rated as more attractive than boys. Why Attractiveness Hinders Self-Esteem The study authors offer several explanations (not explored in their study) as to why more attractive teens might have lower levels of self-esteem: Changes during puberty: They suggest that the more attractive adolescents may perceive the actual or impending changes of puberty as negatively affecting their appearance, while less attractive young adolescents may view these changes as having a positive impact on their appearance.High expectations: Its possible that peers, teachers, and parents often unconsciously expect higher levels of social functioning and academic performance from attractive children. These expectations may be overwhelming for children and create a sense of self-doubt or low self-esteem if they feel they cannot live up to other peoples expectations.Perception of attractiveness: Very simply, young adolescents may have had a different perception of their attractiveness than the research team that rated their photographs. It is likely that many factors contribute to a persons perception of attractiveness, which was not accounted for in the study. Low Self-Esteem and Depression It is thought that low or unstable self-esteem may be a vulnerability for depression. It is also known that during early adolescence when children are often going through puberty, rates of depression increase, especially in girls. One study found that low self-esteem was a predictor for depression in adolescence and young adulthood.?? This suggests that having poor self-esteem can be a risk factor for depression. Its important to know, however, that low self-esteem does not always lead to depression. Certainly, attractiveness does not always lead to depression. However, parents should be aware that a child is susceptible to low self-esteem regardless of appearance and may be especially vulnerable in early adolescence. Talk to your childs pediatrician or another mental health provider if they have low self-esteem and other signs and symptoms of depression, such as: SadnessSocial withdrawalIrritabilityFeelings of guiltAcademic declineUnexplained physical ailmentsAppetite and sleeping pattern changes Providing extra support, encouragement, and love during the sometimes trying early adolescent years can only have a positive impact on your childs development. Are Low Self-Esteem and Depression the Same Thing? How to Spot Low Self-Esteem The teen years are a time of transition and often upheaval. As kids test boundaries and explore their identity, its important for parents and guardians to watch for signs of low self-esteem. But the signs arent always easy to spot. Unfortunately, parents sometimes dismiss symptoms of low-self esteem as normal teenage behavior or adolescent moodiness. Some behaviors to watch for include: Blaming themselves, often excessively, for mistakesHaving a fear of failingAvoiding opportunitiesRefusing to try new thingsPoor social relationshipsBeing unmotivated or disinterestedAn inability to accept compliments or praiseAlways comparing themselves to othersNegative self-talkSelf-critical comments Low self-esteem can manifest in a variety of ways. Some teens may experience anger, lashing out or blaming others to avoid facing their own perceived shortcomings. Others may withdraw and avoid situations that expose them to potential failure or judgment. You know your child best. If you begin to notice patterns of behavior indicating that your teen is feeling unwanted, insecure, or unloved, look for ways to boost your childs self-esteem. Ways to Help Self-esteem takes time to develop and your teen has a whole host of influences that also contribute to their sense of personal worth. The media, friends, family members, co-workers, and their lifetime of personal experiences can all play a part in how teens feel about themselves. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to help teens develop better self-esteem. Model positive self-esteem. Negative thinking often contributes to feelings of low self-esteem. One way to combat this is to talk through things in a way that shows a more positive, healthy approach. Dont engage in negative self-talk in front of your children. Dont just tell your teen to think positive or look on the bright side. Instead, point out aspects of the situation that are a cause for positivity or pride.Talk about it. Be willing to discuss the things that your teen is dealing with. Let them know that you recognize what they are going through. Dont be dismissive or trivialize their feelings.Encourage your teen to focus on strengths. Negative thinking causes people to give too much weight to weaknesses or failures. Instead, make it a point to remind your child of their abilities and strengths. Remind them that their worth is not contingent upon their appearance. Get Help If you are concerned about your teens self-esteem or feel that it is contributing to feelings of depression, dont be afraid to talk to a doctor or mental health professional. Early intervention can provide solutions and ideas that can help improve esteem and address any underlying conditions that might be affecting your childs ability to cope and function. A Word From Verywell The teen years can be turbulent and struggles with identity and appearance can challenge how kids feel about themselves. Parents can help by making sure that their children know a persons value does not hinge on their physical attractiveness. How Teenage Depression Differs From Adult Depression

Compare/Contrast Willy Loman (Death of a Salesman) and...
ââ¬Å"May I never wake up from the American dream.â⬠Carrie Latet describes the most sought after dream: the dream of a house surrounded by a white picket fence, the dream people work their entire lives for, the dream people fight wars for: the American dream. However, Americaââ¬â¢s rise to industrialism in the 19th and 20th centuries replaced this dream with the desire to get rich fast. This change led people to believe that it is possible, common even, to obtain wealth rapidly; yet this is not the case. Sometimes, when an individual is unable to acquire such extreme wealth, he create a sense of false reality for himself, his common sense is blurred, and he sees opportunities where there are none. Characters Walter Lee Younger and Willy Loman areâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I want them to know the kind of stock they spring from.â⬠(48). This is ironic, because Willy doesnââ¬â¢t remember his father aside from his beard and his flute, so he would not know if his fat her would be someone to admire. Even though Willy does not have a job, he wants so badly to continue being a salesman that he still drives out to Boston and other cities, deluding his faithful wife, Linda Loman, and in part, himself, to think that he is going on important selling missions. Willy lies so convincingly that, when Ben proposes the idea of going to Alaska, a shocked Linda exclaims, ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re well liked, and the boys love you, and someday ââ¬â why, old man Wagner told him just the other day that if he keeps it up heââ¬â¢ll be a member of the firm . . .â⬠(85). Linda is clearly oblivious to the fact that Willy is crestfallen and miserable. Willy even tries to prove to himself that he is happy, but the only true reason he remains a salesman is to gain the money he believes accompanies the job. Throughout Willyââ¬â¢s struggle, Charley, a FOIL to Willy, is constantly at Willyââ¬â¢s side helping him. Charley is Willyââ¬â¢s crutch, his reality ch eck, and basically his only friend. While Willy fights to keep his family afloat, Charley has a steady job; while Willy manages his childrenââ¬â¢s lives, Charley leaves his only son, Bernard, to find his own path; while Willy loses his grip on reality, Charley has a firm grasp and a level head. Italian Renaissance Essays - Art History, Visual Arts,
Italian Renaissance The Italian renaissance was as the name implies the rebirth of painting. This does not imply that all the advances of painting came from this period but that the masters learned to combine new and old. The list of artist who contributed to the advancement in painting during the renaissance is as diverse as the paintings. The Black Death (bubonic and pneumonic plague) caused an actual decline in art from the prosperity of the high Middle Ages. The plague killed almost a third of the people in Europe and the renaissance was the first advancement in the arts after this terrible devastation. The capital of the Tuscany region of Italy was Florence and this is where many of the new renaissance artist were trained. The renaissance, broadly considered covered the years between 1400 and 1600, although specialist do disagree on these dates. During this period artist were no longer regarded as mere artisans, as they had been in the past but were now considered independent personalities. Masaccio made notable advances in the styles of paintings such as perspective, space, and surrounding his subjects in light and air. The next great step was in the mellowness and richness of colors used by Bellini. The complex strokes of color make the surrounding light and air almost inseparable from the figures. Bellini was a great artist and teacher who brought Venetian art onto the scene to the point that it was at the forefront of the Renaissance. The Painter Sandro Botticelli comes along as the next great painter after Masaccio. When you look at the painting Primavera 1482, you see the new, sharply contoured, slender form and rippling sinuous line that is synonymous with Botticelli. In the painting Botticelli catches the freshness of an early spring morning, with the pale light shining through the tall, straight trees, already laden with their golden fruit. The two paintings that are said to epitomize the renaissance are the Mona Lisa (1503-06) and the Last Supper (1495-97) by the master Leonardo da Vinci who was the elder of the Florentine masters. The observation of nature, firsthand investigations, and experimentation is what set him apart from his peers early on. Like Shakespeare he came from an insignificant background and fittingly described as a genius. The art of perspective was used extensively by Florentine artist Paolo Ucello (Paolo di Dono, 1397-1475), and this was shown very well in his painting The Hunt in the Forest, 1460's. The painting shows how well he used perspective the way everything in it is organized upon a distant and almost unseen stag, a vanishing stag: the vanishing point. The art of perspective is the representation of solid objects and three-dimensional space in accordance with our optical perception of these things. We actually see the world in perspective the way things get smaller as they are farther away. During the Renaissance northern Italy was one of the wealthiest regions in Europe. Genoa and Venice both had populations of around 100,000 by 1400 and were the main centers of trade. Florence, with a population of 55,000 was the center for manufacture and distribution. The renaissance continued with many great painters improving the different styles and colors in the fantastic world of painting and art.

Literature Review and Research Methodology Draft Effects of Internet Addiction on Family Relationships among Teenagers
Literature Review and Research Methodology Draft Effects of Internet Addiction on Family Relationships among Teenagers Introduction Literature review pertains to cross-examining what other scholars have done in the field of study. This is based on the idea that knowledge is cumulative. Revisiting other peopleââ¬â¢s ideas and thoughts help in formulating both theoretical and conceptual frameworks. In this study, the researcher will employ some theories of motivation, which are part of theoretical literature.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Literature Review and Research Methodology Draft: Effects of Internet Addiction on Family Relationships among Teenagers specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Conceptual literature will be revisited by scrutinizing what other researchers have concluded in their studies regarding to motivation of employees. Literature review is important because it offers a foundation to any study. Generally, literature review is related to determining how much is known. It is important because it keeps away un necessary duplication of data and gives more knowledge to the researcher (Lauby 2005, p. 7). The researcher can only avoid mistakes committed by other researchers if he/she reviews literature. Therefore, review of literature helps a researcher to formulate a study that stands the taste of time. Child Pornography Research shows that child pornographic material found on the internet is usually a result of abduction. This behavior has always threatened to interfere with the very survival of society since it has various effects to children. Children found engaging in pornography are normally victimized. In one of the studies conducted in the US, 100 victims were interviewed and the results had some similarities. First, victims complained about physical pain because they were forced to engage in activities that they are not used to doing. Children feel threatened because those taking them through such pains might even be their relatives (Dombrowski, Gischlar, Durst, 2007). Unwanted sexu al solicitation As shown in the graph below, adolescents are in danger of sexual solicitation. Since there is no enough data to support this claim, this study would try to prove that unwanted internet sexual solicitation affects family relations in one way or the other. Through the internet, the family is exposed to risky sexual behaviors. A study conducted in Dutch among the adolescents indicated that adolescents were likely to engage in sexual solicitation as opposed to adults. In the study, females were frequently solicited as opposed to men. In the study, the benefits of sexual solicitation were few as compared to the risks (Bourke, Hernandez, 2009).Advertising Looking for research paper on education? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Conclusion From the above information, it is eminent that research gaps exist hence it is pertinent to conduct a study to establish the extent at which the internet affects family r elations. Methodology The proposal would utilize quantitative research methods in conducting the study and collecting data. Quantitative research would be used since it aims at summarizing data mathematically. In this regard, the research will take the form of a survey, whereby the researcher will identify some individuals and post questionnaires to them. The sampled population will be selected randomly in order to eliminate biases (Hakim, 2000). The researcher will further make follow-ups, by conducting respondents on phone. Design There will be two key methods used to gather information in the proposal. The first one will be through a questionaire, which will be administered online to the selected victims and offenders. The questionaire will seek to capture various attutudes of victims and offenders as regards to child pornography and unwanted sexual solicitation. The second source of information that will be used in the proposal would be literature on various aspects internet har assment. The focus of the literature review will be to find information on effects of the internet on family members and also to determine the current state of research as regards to the effects of the internet. The questionnaire will have four Parts. The first part will seek to capture the biodata information of respondents. The second part will deal with the demography and gender of the respondents. This would ascertain the prevalence of views in varoius categories in order to ensure that if any differences come about, then they would be captured in their demographic space.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Literature Review and Research Methodology Draft: Effects of Internet Addiction on Family Relationships among Teenagers specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The third part will deal with societal status and experience of both victims and offenders as regards to child pornography and unwanted sexual solicitat ion (Creswell, 2003). The motivation for this section came from the understanding that different sections of population respond differently to change, based on age and societal status. The fourth part will delve into the specific issues relating to the effects of the internet to victims and offenders, starting from the understanding of the concept to the possible effects it would have on respondents. Theoretical and Conceptual Framework The study will utilize deductive scaffold because some theories will be used to give a certain picture of the study. Deductive reasoning starts by analyzing some concepts before moving to the field to confirm the claims. The researcher will analyze some theories related to child pornography and unwanted sexual solicitation before moving to the field to collect data. The technique is constructive because it equips the researcher with relevant information. In other words, deductive reasoning moves from generalizations to the specific idea. Two theories will first be analyzed before moving to the field. Sampling Methods The most applicable sampling method for the proposal will be random sampling. Considering that the targeted population consists of children and adults in the families, there was no much risk of having biased data. If the survey needed to cover the entire family members, systematic sampling, coupled with stratified sampling would be ideal to ensure cross-sectional representation. However, the survey targeted children and their parents. Hence, random sampling would prove to be sufficient to collect required data (Crotty, 2003). References Bourke, M., Hernandez, A. (2009). Flannery Oconnor's a good man is hard to find Essay
Flannery Oconnor's a good man is hard to find - Essay Example After the cat jumped on Baileys shoulder and caused the car to wreck, the grandmother was scared of Baileys reaction. She was relieved to see the other car coming at first. Upon recognizing the Misfit, the grandmother blurted out who he was. If she would have not recognized him, maybe the men would have just stole the car. Maybe they would have fixed the car and had the family take them somewhere. However once the grandmother said the Misfits name, she signed their death warrants. When Bailey said the nasty phrase that made his mother cry, he knew that they would all be killed. The Misfit and the grandmother had a conversation as his friends were killing her family in the woods. In some ways the Misfit heard the grandmother and vice versa unlike their respective friends and families. The grandmother was trying to relate to the Misfit by insisting he must be a good man. The Misfit was trying to explain that he was not a good man. The grandmothers words are what condemned her to death. The grandmother was trying to conform the Misfit into her idea of a good man. The Misfit was not that man. In many ways the Misfit was more honest than the grandmother. He knew who he was; a thief, killer, and reprobate. The grandmother had lived a hypocritical life. Her goal was to be seen as a lady, when in reality she was not. She lied, manipulated, and twisted her son daily. The Misfit knew this. "She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life." The violence is what made her real. In this way she was just like the Misfit. The violence made him

While Dunning's OLI model provides a general paradigm for Essay
While Dunning's OLI model provides a general paradigm for expelling the determinants of FDI, its use in designing an international corporate strategy is limited and requires more models for the task - Essay Example meanwhile, Douma and Schreuder (2012) noted that as far foreign direct investment (FDI) is the approach to internationalisation a company seeks, the eclectic paradigm, also known as the OLI (ownership, location, internalisation) model developed by John Dunning is one important framework that provides general paradigm for knowing the determinants of the FDI. In this paper, the strengths of the OLI model to the study of FDI are appreciated whiles examining the limitations of the model in designing an international corporate strategy for firms. By extension, the paper takes a stance that it is one thing to be engaged in internationalisation and another to have an international corporate strategy. This is because the latter is wider and covers several aspects of corporate growth and expansion management than the former (Li, Ferreira & Serra, 2009). There are several ways that the OLI model helps in influencing the study of FDI. On the whole, the model helps firms to make decision on becoming multinational by understanding the potential sources of advantages they have that could make them successful. The model is important in providing firms with an understanding of their ownership advantages, where the question of firm-specific qualities of the firm is addressed (Antras & Elhanan, 2004). Because the firm-specific advantages are tied around the companyââ¬â¢s unique approach to doing business, it helps firms to identify their competitive advantage which allows them to overcome the cost of operating in international markets (Peng, 2001). Without applying the OLI model and for that matter ownership advantage therefore, it becomes difficult for firms to identify their competitive advantage with which they will become preferred options for consumers instead of their competitors. Secondly, the OLI model is relevant in helping firms identify location advantages, where the firms answer questions on the best places to choose for internationalisation (Neary, 2007). In

Scarlet Letter :: essays research papers
"Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get," suggests Tom Hanks in the motion picture "Forrest Gump". He utilizes this metaphor to align a box of chocolates as a symbol for life. Symbolism serves as a useful tool to convey a message or point subtly so that the concept lingers in the mind of the reader, who then establishes a relation in his or her mind with that object and the message. Hawthorne uses symbolism in The Scarlet Letter extensively to express the underlying truths about the stifling nature of Puritan society and the dispositions of the characters in the novel. Such elements as nature, color, and light; the scarlet letter itself; as well as the scaffold, where the three pinnacles of the plot occur, operate on a firm foundation of symbolism. Nature, color and light are used as symbols throughout the novel to illustrate several areas of the story (Waggoner 154). The prison door, for example, was described as being composed of ââ¬Å"oak and ironâ⬠and its coloring ââ¬Å"sadâ⬠and ââ¬Å"grayâ⬠, symbolizing the rigidity of the Puritan society against sinners (Waggoner 154). The rosebush situated outside of the prison door is like a ââ¬Å"moral blossomâ⬠growing amongst the bitter weeds of society, in the ââ¬Å"most unlikely of placesâ⬠(Hawthorne). The placement of the rosebush in such a dank, improbable position as outside of a place housing sinners (the prison), imparts the fact that such an element of beauty and innocence is nevertheless able to be born out of a station with such an ill aura. Pearl is symbolic of the rosebush in that she was spawned from the same evil air of sin (Waggoner 156). However, her purity is just as real as that which comes from a origin of virtue (Waggoner 156). She is often associated with roses (Waggoner 156). For example, in the governorââ¬â¢s she cries and pleas that she must have one (Waggoner 156). In addition, her very name is an indication of the symbol she conveys (Waggoner 157). Like a pearl comes from the mangled, impure exterior of the oyster, Pearl comes from the equally impure and squalid exterior of the sin her parents willingly committed (Waggoner 157). Another nature related symbol comes in the forest. The forest itself holds its own variety of symbolism. ââ¬Å"Freedomâ⬠is one expression of the forest. There is no reason for Hester and Dimmesdale to be secretive among the trees where no one can witness their union (Matthiessen 299).

Positive and Negative emotions Essay
à There are a few benefits associated with experiencing a positive emotion theory. Typically, when you are having a positive emotion you see things on the up side rather than a negative outlook. For instance, people always feel good or continue to think positive if they are getting good grades in school. I, myself is very eager to sustain a positive emotion when my grades are above average and I am getting positive feedback from the instructor saying that I am on a great path in that class. This emotion will help promote a positive well-being. Another benefit associated with experiencing positive emotion is positive effect. With this warrants joy, happiness, and positive fulfillment. These emotions create a desire to search for new possibilities as well expressing your creative talents. Me personally, women are more emotional creatures. We sometimes can get in our feeling, rather the emotion is positive or negative. We are sensitive, shy, and reluctant at times, versus men who tend to keep their emotions in check. I feel men are the lessor emotionally engaging of the two. Most of the time men are more positive about certain situation unlike women, we can find negativity in a plain paper bag. When comes to the raising of children, men are more apt to being positive. I say that because I can be all up in my emotions dealing with our son and my husband (almost with a blank stare on his face) will say he is a boy let him get bumps and bruises that will toughen him up. Despite what he says I am still a nervous wreck when may fall or hurt himself. So, I think there is a big gap in how men and women differ in negative emotions.

The setting takes place in Dublin, Ireland in 1932. Christy Brown was born into a poor, working-class Irish family in Dublin, Ireland 1932. A victim of cerebral palsy, he could neither control his speech nor his movements, apart from his left foot. For the first ten years of his life he was falsely believed to be intellectually disabled. Christy Brown was born in Ireland in 1932, after a difficult birth and with a serious disability that the doctors of the time were unable to name. They urged his parents not to place their trust in him, as he was, they believed, an imbecile After he was born, his parents then had five other children, all healthy. Christy s mother, however, refused to systemize him, keeping him at home and treating him with tender care. It would not be until years later that she would learn that Christy s affliction was severe cerebra l palsy. At the age of 5, he wrote his first letter ,â⬠Aâ⬠, on a chalkboard using his left foot. His left foot proved to the family he was not an imbecile but a human being able to think and express his thoughts. His mother was resolute to teaching her son the basics ofShow MoreRelatedThe Life of Sylvia Plath1006 Words à |à 5 PagesThe Life of Sylvia Plath Sylvia Plaths life, like her manic depression, constantly jumped between Heaven and Hell. Consumerism -- Definition and Discussion
Whileà consumption is an activity people engage in, sociologists understand consumerism to be a powerful ideology characteristic of Western society that frames our worldview, values, relationships, identities, and behavior. Consumer culture drives us to seek happiness and fulfillment through mindless consumption and serves as a necessary component of capitalist society, which demands mass production and unending sales growth. Sociological Definitions Definitions of consumerism vary. Some sociologists consider it a social condition where consumption is ââ¬Å"especially important if not actually centralâ⬠to someones life, or even ââ¬Å"the very purpose of existence.â⬠This understanding binds society together to channel our wants, needs, longings, and pursuit of emotional fulfillment into the consumption of material goods and services. Sociologists will similarly describeà consumerism as a way of life, ââ¬Å"an ideology that seductively binds people to [the] systemâ⬠of mass production, turning consumption ââ¬Å"from a means to an end.â⬠As such, acquiring goods becomes the basis of our identity and sense of self. ââ¬Å"At its extreme, consumerism reduces consumption to a therapeutic program of compensation for lifeââ¬â¢s ills, even a road to personal salvation.â⬠Echoingà Karl Marxââ¬â¢s theory of the alienation of workers within a capitalist system, consumerist urges becomeà a social force separate from the individual and operating independently. Products and brands become the force that propels and reproduces norms, social relations, and the general structure of society. Consumerism exists when the consumer goods we desire drive what happens in society or even shape our entire social system. The dominant worldview, values, and culture are inspired by disposable and empty consumption. Consumerism is a type of social arrangement that results from recycling mundane, permanent and so to speak regime-neutral human wants, desires and longings into the principal propelling force of society, a force that coordinates systemic reproduction, social integration, social stratification and the formation of human individuals, as well as playing a major role in the processes of individual and group self-policies.(Bauman, Consuming Life) Psychological Effects Consumerist tendencies define how we understand ourselves, how we affiliate with others, and the overall extent to which we fit in with and are valued by society at large. Because individual social and economic values are defined and validated by spending practices, consumerism becomes the ideological lens through which we experience the world, what is possible for us, and our options for achieving goals. Consumerism manipulates the probabilities of individual choices and conduct.â⬠Consumerism shapes us in such a way that we want to acquire material goods not because they are useful, but because of what they say about us. We want the newest and the best to fit in with or outshine others. Thus, we experience an ââ¬Å"ever-increasing volume and intensity of desire.â⬠In a society of consumers, joy and status are fueled by planned obsolescence, premised on acquiring goods and disposing of them. Consumerism both depends on and reproduces an insatiability of desires and needs. The cruel trick is that a society of consumers thrives on the inability to ever consume enough, on the ultimate failure of the mass-produced system to satisfy anyone. While it promises to deliver, the system only briefly does so. Rather than cultivating happiness, consumerism cultivates fearââ¬âfear of not fitting in, of not possessing the proper things, of not signifying the right persona or social status. Consumerism is defined by perpetual dissatisfaction. Resources and Further Reading Bauman, Zygmunt. Consuming Life. The research article by Suniya Luthar, Karen Shoum and Pamela Brown (2006) entitled ââ¬Å"Extracurricular involvement among affluent youth: A scapegoat for ubiquitous achievement pressuresâ⬠attempted to determine the extracurricular involvement of high status secondary students and how this affected their academic performance and whether it was directly the source of the pressure to achieve. The researchers built their study on the notion that children from affluent communities are overscheduled and have too many things to accomplish at a given day because it is expected by their parents. They said that childrenââ¬â¢s involvement in extracurricular activities are imposed by their parents and thus places undue stress and pressure for the student to succeed and achieve. We will write a custom essay sample on The researchers built their study or any similar topic only for you Order Now Although, some researchers had found evidence to support the assumption that involvement in extracurricular activities improved academic performance as groups, clubs and teams provide opportunities for healthy competition fostering the need to achieve as a desirable motive for subsequent endeavors. Moreover, the researchers mainly focused their attention to affluent children or students who come from affluent families because they are more likely to be pressured by their parents to succeed. At the same time, affluent students have more chances of cultivating their interests in extracurricular activities because they have the resources to do so. à The authors defined extracurricular involvement as the degree to which students participate in activities that are not directly associated to their academic performance and has no bearing on their academic grades and is conducted outside of regular school hours with the presence of a coach or trainer. Extracurricular involvement was measured in terms of four broad categories; sports, arts, academics and civic. The researchers hypothesized that upper class students are overscheduled and thus have more adjustment issues, however, they were more inclined to believe that hours spent in extracurricular activities are not to blame but the family processes that are related to academic achievement are the cause. The family processes include parentââ¬â¢s emphasis on achievement; parental criticism, high achievement expectations and values that promoted getting ahead of others, lack of adult supervision after school and how often children ate dinner with parents. The methods used to test the hypothesis of the researchers were varied; they used self-report questionnaires to obtain information on maladjustment indicators such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, while they used school grades and teacher rating behavior to measure academic performance and behavior. The researchers also used a two dimensional framework in assessing their research outcomes, examining extracurricular activities and involvement per se, and how extracurricular activities competed with the measured family outcomes. The results of the study indicated that there were minimal links between extracurricular activities and pressure leading to adjustment problems. The researchers found that there is a weak relationship in the time spent in sports, academic, arts and civic activities to that of behavioral maladjustments and competence. The researchers however found evidence that supported the hypothesis that parental expectations were more detrimental to the studentââ¬â¢s adjustment. It was found that parental criticism and lack of adult supervision had a more negative effect to student behavior than other variables. How to cite The researchers built their study, Papers

Understanding the Limitations of Financial Ratio
Question: Discuss financial ratio analysis. Identify two advantages and two disadvantages to using ratios in financial analysis. Answer: The two advantages of using ratio analysis are: Projection of the firms ability Financial ratios help in shedding light on the skills of the firm to meet the obligations. Moreover, from the financial ratios, the position of the business can be known (Northington, 2011). These ratios can be compared with the past or the rivals ratio to know the position of the company. Moreover, accountants, as well as analysts to predict the variables use the ratios. Predictive purpose The company and the management to ascertain the empirical relationship can use financial ratios. This is done by comparing the computed ratios with the pre-determined ones. In short, it provides guidance on the fact that where the business will stand in the future (Spiceland et. al, 2011). The two disadvantage of using ratio analysis are: Inconsistent techniques Financial ratios are determined by the accounting principles and classifications. However, such choices might not be correct and consistent. Hence, comparability is compromised. There is a strong availability of choices and hence, declines the chances of comparability (Joseph, 2015). Different companies might choose a different method of analysis and hence, difference might occur. Problem with numerator and denominator If either of the numerator or denominator is misstated then the financial ratio will project an error. There might be a human error, or there might be an error in the collection of data leading to issues. Moreover, when manipulating accruals are used it might lead to error and hence interpretation will be affected (Joseph, 2015). References Joseph F. (2015). A critical review of literature on the importance of social media in branding The WritePass Journal
A critical review of literature on the importance of social media in branding 1.0 Introduction A critical review of literature on the importance of social media in branding ). On the contrary it can be said that more and more retailers and business are becoming increasingly aware of the social media and are waiting to exploit the potential that social marketing offers (Olivas-lujan, 2013) 1.1 Background Spend on social media by the businesses are on the rise. Recent study by the IAB (Internet Advertising Bureau) shows that in the first half of 2014 in the UK alone, there has been a rise of 53% in the spend on social media by businesses with a total contribution of à £242.5 million (Somerville, 2014). Another study by IAB on FMGC sector consisting of more than 4500 survey responses and 800 interviews showed that 90% of the customers would use social media to refer the brands to peers, 4 in 5 customers would buy products that have good social media coverage and 83% would be willing to try products that are popular in social media (Anon, 2013). Similarly, a research conducted by Mass Relevance that provides social media curation platform to clients found that 59% of the consumers will more likely trust a brand that has presence in the social media and 64% of the consumers interviewed have already made purchases based on social media presence and reviews (Chaney, 2012). Appendix 1 shows the social media advertising effects on consumers (Source: Neilsen Survey: Anon, 2012) 1.2 Motivation From the above, it can be understood that social media has a profound impact on the consumersââ¬â¢ choice of brands and that it is key to engage effectively with customers. There is a lot of literature that discusses about the social media impact on consumers, why businesses should engage with customers, exploiting social media to provide value add etc. The main aim of this research is to look into various key researches in this area and to provide a critical review on the literature. The critical review aims to see if: The problems are identified clearly The literature provides a balanced view There are gaps in the literature 1.3 Research Process The success of the research is admittedly determined by measuring the extent to which each of the research objectives is met. The following steps are followed during this research to ensure its success. These steps are as follows: Firstly, a background into the research and its motivations is given. Following this, the key literature in this area is thoroughly investigated. This is intended to ensure that all aspects of the research are identified and that the challenges or gaps in the current literature are clearly understood. Next, the literature is critically analysed to see if the problems are identified and if it provides a balanced view of the topic. It also looks into the research methodology to see if the methods used are consistent with the qualitative and quantitative methods and also checks for what has not been provided. Finally, this research concludes by providing a conclusion that is supported by evidence presented in the literature. It also makes recommendations where appropriate. In summary, this chapter has provided a brief overview of the research, addressed the key challenges or gaps in the literature and justified the need to conduct this research. This chapter has also set the background and motivations for the research in order to enable the reader to better understand the subsequent chapters. The central question for the research has addressed here, and the reader now also understands the problem statements that have led to this research. 2.0 Literature Review This research discusses about social media and its effect on branding and consumers. But what is social media? The term social media can be defined as ââ¬Å" Many online tools that allow people with similar interests to share information, learn from others, or network in an open process. The information found on these sites is commonly referred to as ââ¬Ëuser-generated contentââ¬â¢, which means anyone is able to post with minimal restrictions or oversight.â⬠(Wilson, 2010) Drury (2007) discusses how marketers of various businesses can effectively engage in social media marketing. The paper gives a fairly comprehensive view on what social media is and the role of marketing in social media. It discusses about how social media can be monetised by the marketers. The paper lists out opportunities that can be tapped for commercial benefits and also emphasises on the mobile marketing strategy and describes the success criteria for measuring success. The paper however has the following drawbacks: It is very much general and has no qualitative or quantitative measures to define the success criteria. It gives a good overall picture but it would have been better if the context of the paper was more towards assessing the impact or the Return on Investment (ROI) of a specific sector or business. It lacks specific examples and also does not mention any strategy for implementation or even list challenges that organisations face while implementing good strategies for social media marketing. Michaelidou et al (2011) in their research discuss about social media marketingââ¬â¢s impact on small and medium B2B brands. They discuss in detail the adaption of social media networking as a marketing platform to be able to achieve the brand objectives and also the perceptions around the barriers of using social marketing networks. The research paper makes use of email surveys to understand the usage of social media by small and medium scale businesses that operate in the UK and the main drivers that motivate SMEs to adapt to the new channel of marketing. It clearly states the motivation of the research, giving appropriate background to the research and the method used for the research is depicted concisely. The research analyses the findings from the email survey and discusses the methods used for analysis. It provides a broad range of information and also clearly identifies the shortcomings in the business implementation of social media networking practices. It discusses how t hese pitfalls can be overcome and provides details for further improvement areas and scope for additional research in the future. The drawbacks of the paper are: Sample size: The sample size of the survey could have been more and also various other methods for obtaining the review could have been used. This would have ensured that the B2B base was thoroughly covered. Focus: The focus is on B2B businesses alone. It would have been interesting to see the results if the research was extended to B2C as well for small and medium scale enterprises. Some researches focus specifically on skills gap in digital marketing within specific industries. One such research concentrates on the communications industry (Royle and Laing, 2014). The research discusses the need for having the necessary skills in digital marketing arena and stresses on the growth and popularity of digital/social media marketing. The research explores the various gaps in the industry for digital marketing with a specific emphasis to communications sector and provides a best practice guide for the industry. It details the challenges that organisations face while implementing social media marketing and discusses the need to have evaluation criteria and metrics to critically analyse the success of social marketing strategies and campaigns within organisations. The paper talks about the key challenges that businesses face while trying to merge traditional marketing practices with that of social marketing. The rationale for the research is clearly mentioned and the li terature review is comprehensive. The conceptual framework is clearly detailed and the methodology used for developing the framework is precise. The research makes use of focus groups and interviews to be able to gauge the skill gap in the industry. The drawbacks of this research are: Limited sample size: The research could have used more samples to be able to analyse effectively the findings. Given that the research has already narrowed down by industry, it would have been good to get a more detailed view of the industry and a larger sample would have facilitated this. A study by Harvard Business Review (Edelman, 2010) discusses how the internet and the social marketing has changed not only the way businesses operate but also how consumers choose their products. It takes the reader through the funnel metaphor which was earlier being used by marketers to understand how consumers choose their products and how this has moved to a more open-ended approach whereby consumers no longer follow a methodical approach of selecting products. It stresses how important it is for brands to be able to connect with the consumers and studied the consumersââ¬â¢ decisions across five different industries namely automobiles, skincare, insurance, mobile telecommunications and electronics in three different continents. Based on the results of the study, it proposed a four-stage model that focuses on todayââ¬â¢s consumers using social media for advocating products and also purchasing based on the reviews and advocacy received. The research takes the reader through t he entire customer journey and tells the businesses what it should not focus its energy and resources on. Providing statistical information about various surveys enables the businesses to identify the key areas that it should concentrate on to be able to build a good brand image online. Though the research is comprehensive it lacks in the following: Framework: It does not suggest what needs to be done and a framework for implementing those. The key focus is on what not to be done and it leaves it to the businesses to work on the best strategy. Sample size and analysis: The research does not disclose the sample size or indicate clearly the analysis method used to come to the conclusion. This section worked on identifying key research in the literature and also provided a critical review of each of the researches identified. 3.0 Conclusion Though there is a lot of literature on various aspects including but not limited to effects of social media on small and medium scale enterprises, identification of skill gaps in social media with specific emphasis to certain industries, general study on implementation challenges, perception of social media on businesses, barriers to adaptation of social media by businesses etc. it can be found that there is not much literature that specifically talks about a common framework for adapting to social media marketing along with the challenges that businesses might face and the evaluation criteria. Similarly while most of these researches make use of one or more methods for data collection, it is not very comprehensive. There is a gap in the current literature in terms of data collected from a wide range of sources using a bigger sample set. Given that technology has enabled a higher reach to customers, it would be good to get a larger sample to be able to effectively analyse the results . In many cases, the limitations of the research scope could be worked on to be able to get more information on the above mentioned areas. In short, it can be said that the social media marketing and the research around it are yet to attain the maturity level and there is a lot of scope for research that would aid businesses to effectively handle and manage social media marketing concerns and overcome challenges in a seamless and stress-free manner. 4.0 References Tuten, 2008: Advertising 2.0: Social Media Marketing in a Web 2.0 world, Greenwood publishing group.
